What prompted the idea to create a service?
In the Kansas City and surrounding areas, we’ve seen Christian Scientists dealing with challenges seek alternative means because Christian Science (CS) nursing was not readily available. Our Board has also seen family members and church friends leave town to get CS nursing help in Saint Louis, Denver, or Dallas because there was no CS nursing support available. Love’s Provision wants to provide CS nursing to those who want it locally.
What indications do you have there is a need?
Love’s Provision board members can give several examples of the growing need for a Christian Science (CS) nurse where individuals can remain in their home under CS care. The creation of the National Fund for Christian Science Nursing (NFCSN) has eliminated the financial concerns of many Christian Scientists, and therefore, made CS nursing care more affordable.
Do you sense a willingness of the Kansas City regional branches to support a Christian Science nursing service?
Absolutely. Likewise, other churches in the surrounding areas have expressed enthusiasm for our organization and supported us financially.
What is the history of the area in terms of Christian Science (CS) nursing awareness and has a service been discussed or happened before now?
The Kansas City area has always had an interest and at one time had a CS nursing service, but the affordability of Christian Science nursing care was a challenge. Once the NFCSN was established, the desire for CS nursing services increased.
What is it like to live in Kansas City?
KC and its surrounding suburbs are in the heartland of the United States. Housing is some of the least expensive in the US. If you’re into sports, KC has professional football (KC Chiefs, 2020, 2023, 2024 Super Bowl Champions), baseball (KC Royals, 2015 World Series Champions), and soccer (Sporting KC, 2013 MLS Champions), University of Kansas basketball (2022 NCAA national champions), and the Kansas Speedway if you’re into NASCAR racing. KC is blessed with beautiful art museums and wonderful live theatre, ballet, opera, and orchestra venues. Fantastic dining and retail shopping await at the Plaza, Crown Center, Town Center, and Zona Rosa around KC. There are many, many lakes, parks, and golf courses to take advantage of the great outdoors. The weather is relatively mild with snow rarely staying on the ground more than a few days in winter and with temperatures rarely getting above 95 degrees in the summer, minimizing the challenges of driving outside the KC area.
